Mangaluru, Aug 15: Expert PU College, Kodialbail, celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour, with S L Bhoje Gowda, member of the State Bar Council, as the chief guest. He ceremonially unfurled the National Flag at Bhagavathi Temple Kootakkala Auditorium.

Addressing the gathering, Gowda urged students to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s forefathers, teachers and elders and make Independence Day meaningful through their own contribution to society. Emphasising the role of youth in nation-building, he said, “The role of the youth in building today’s society is great.” He encouraged students to bring pride to their country, language, parents and educational institutions and make the most of the opportunities available to them. “Shape your student life. Through this, you should serve our country,” he said.

Appreciating the vision and hard work of chairman Narendra L Nayak in building the Expert Educational Institution, Gowda urged students to draw inspiration from his discipline, ideals and commitment. He also stressed the importance of preserving family relationships in a rapidly changing world. “We should not only learn education but also work to build relationships in life with it,” he said.

Chairman Narendra L Nayak called upon students to remember the sacrifices that secured India’s freedom and contribute to nation-building in their own ways. He emphasised that patriotism goes beyond ceremonial expressions. “True patriotism is about being constructive right from our student days - studying well, respecting our teachers and fellow students, and becoming responsible citizens,” he said.

Speaking about the chief guest, Nayak described Bhoje Gowda as “one of the good people you can find,” adding that he has “ears to listen and a heart to respond.” He said this quality of making time for people was something students could learn from him.

The celebration also marked the formal induction of the student council for the academic year 2026–27. Dr Ushaprabha Nayak, vice chairperson, administered the cabinet oath to the newly elected council members. In her address, she reminded the students that leadership is a responsibility and urged them to support their leaders and uphold the dignity of their positions.

Drawing on the philosophy of medicine, she said, “You have knowledge and you try to do something for the patient, to minimize their pain and give them some life. That is the philosophy of being a doctor — and that is what is called seva.” Challenging the Discipline Leaders, she urged students to create an environment where they have “zero job” because everyone chooses to be disciplined. “Whatever flag you are holding has a dignity, and upholding that dignity is your job,” she said.
