Mangaluru, Aug 15: St Aloysius Konkani Sangh along with the Institute of Konkani, St Aloysius University celebrated Konkani Language Recognition Day 2026 on August 14 at the Robert Sequeira Hall of the University.

Chief guest Usha Pai unfurled the flag, while the vice-chancellor of St Aloysius University, Dr Praveen Martis S J, inaugurated the programme by playing the Gumta (a traditional percussion instrument), accompanied by other dignitaries on stage who beat the rhythmic sticks (toni).

Usha Pai, along with her husband Dr Kasturi Mohan Pai, recalled the hard work and effort dedicated to achieving Konkani language recognition and extended warm wishes for Konkani Recognition Day to all those who present for the programme. Dr Kasturi Mohan Pai was also present on the stage.

Fr Prashant Madtha, director of the Konkani Institute, spoke at length about the work and contributions of Konkani and St Aloysius College.

In his presidential address, the vice-chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Dr Praveen Martis, inspired and guided the audience under the motto ‘Konkani and My Contribution.’

The cultural programme featured Konkani recognition songs, dances, and a short play titled ‘Change’ (Badlavan).

Maria Shaila, president of the Konkani Sangh, welcomed the gathering, and student Shavil Vegas delivered the vote of thanks. Student Dion Mascarenhas compered the programme smoothly. Other office-bearers of the Konkani Sangh — Flora Castelino and Adlin Alvares — along with student coordinators Shanan Pinto and Aaron Pinto, were also present on the dais.
