Mangaluru, Aug 15: Ashokanagara Yuvaka Sangha (R), recognised by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports and recipient of the Dakshina Kannada District Best Youth Association Award, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with a meaningful community service programme at the Ashokanagara Higher Primary School Auditorium.

The programme was organised by Joseph Mathias of Merit Freight Systems Co LLC Dubai, UAE, and Merit Freight Systems Co Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru, in memory of Lawrence and Mary Mathias.

As part of the initiative, sarees and dhotis were distributed to senior citizens, while medical assistance, school uniforms for students from classes 1 to 6, a bicycle and a sewing machine were provided to deserving beneficiaries.

The programme was presided over by Joseph Mathias. Joyce Henrieta D'Souza, headmistress of Ashokanagara Higher Primary School; Jayaram, president of Ashokanagara Yuvaka Sangha (R); Rajesh Urwa, president of Koragajja Kshethra, Urwa-Boloor; K Sudhakar Alva, hotel entrepreneur; and Shankar N Punja were present as chief guests and dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Joseph Mathias said the initiative has been conducted every year on August 15 and has now completed its 29th year, with him personally being associated with the programme for 20 years. He highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices of freedom fighters and stressed that independence also brings responsibility towards society and the nation.

Joyce Henrieta appreciated the association’s continued service to the community. Recalling an inspiring incident from the life of former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, she said true fulfilment lies in making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

The programme reflected the true spirit of Independence Day by promoting care for senior citizens, support for education, medical assistance and empowerment of needy families, setting an inspiring example of community service.
