Mangaluru, Aug 16: St Agnes College (Autonomous) was filled with patriotic fervour and joy as the college community gathered to commemorate the 80th Independence Day. The programme commenced with a soulful prayer song that set a tone of reverence and unity. The chief guest, advocate Udayananda A, special public prosecutor, was escorted by the NCC Cadets, along with Sr Marie Prem D’Souza, joint secretary; Sr Dr M Venissa AC, principal; Lt Gayathri B K, ANO, Army Wing; and Flying officer Dr Hithakshi B, ANO, Air Wing.

The highlight of the event was the flag hoisting ceremony, where the national flag was raised high amidst patriotic feel and applause. The chief guest for the occasion, advocate Udayananda hoisted the national flag and delivered an inspiring address in which he said that struggle for India’s independence was not achieved in a day or two but was the result of centuries of struggle and the sacrifices of generations of Indians.

Freedom fighters and countless others sacrificed their comfort, careers, and lives for the nation. Independence Day is not only a celebration of freedom but also a reminder of our responsibilities as citizens to respect others’ rights and uphold unity, equality, peace, democracy, and the Constitution.

Nation-building is the responsibility of every citizen, especially the younger generation, who must adapt to changing times, use science and technology responsibly, avoid addictions and other vices, protect the environment, and become healthy and responsible citizens. As India marks its 80th Independence Day on August 15, we must remember the dreams and expectations of our parents, teachers, and freedom fighters and contribute to building a healthy and strong nation.

As part of the celebrations, a dance drama was performed by the NSS volunteers, followed by patriotic dances presented by the Cultural Association, NCC cadets, and the children of the Kannada Primary School. A patriotic song was also sung by the students.

The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks, leaving everyone with a renewed sense of patriotism and commitment to the growth and progress of the nation.
