Kundapur, Aug 16: A boat that had set out for fishing from the Malpe port sank in the Arabian Sea near Maravanthe late Friday night after water seeped into it.
All six fishermen on board the vessel were safely rescued. The boat, named 'Sinchana', belonged to Krishna Puthran, a resident of Kota Kadri Kattu. It had left Malpe for fishing on August 12.
On the night of August 14, an unidentified object struck the bottom of the boat, causing water to gush inside. Noticing the boat sinking, the crew of nearby fishing boats 'Brindavana' and 'Guru Darshan' quickly rushed to their aid and successfully rescued the fishermen.
Using ropes, the crews of the two rescue boats attempted to tow the sinking vessel towards the shore. However, approximately 12 miles away from the Gangolli lighthouse, the rope snapped due to the fierce sea waves, and the boat completely submerged.
A complaint has been filed estimating a total loss of up to Rs 45 lac. The submerged items include the boat itself, 2,500 litres of diesel, a GPS, wireless communication equipment, fishing nets, and the catch worth around Rs 2.50 lac.
A case has been registered at the Gangolli coastal security police station in connection with the incident.
