Chennai, Aug 16: A complaint has been filed with the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) against BJP state president Nainar Nagendran over alleged derogatory and defamatory remarks made against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and his mother during a public event in Chennai.
The complainant has urged the police to preserve digital evidence related to the remarks, investigate the matter under relevant legal provisions and initiate appropriate criminal proceedings for alleged defamation and public misconduct.
The complaint comes amid a political controversy triggered by Nagendran's remarks made on Saturday at the BJP's state headquarters, Kamalalayam, in Chennai. The BJP leader was responding to Vijay's earlier reference to DMK president MK Stalin through a "kutti kathai" or short story in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Speaking at the party event, Nagendran mocked Vijay's repeated references to "father" in the Assembly. He said that those wanting to know "where their father is" should ask their mother at home instead of looking for the answer in the Assembly.
The complainant has described the remarks concerning Vijay and his mother as derogatory and defamatory and sought legal action against Nagendran. The complaint also requested police authorities to examine and seize audio and video recordings of the event as part of the investigation.
The controversy traces back to Vijay's remarks in the Assembly following the DMK's defeat in the April 2026 Assembly election.
Vijay had narrated a "kutti kathai" that made a humorous reference to the whereabouts of Udhayanidhi Stalin's father, in an apparent reference to DMK president MK Stalin's defeat in the Kolathur constituency.
The remarks had drawn criticism from several political parties, including the DMK. Responding to Vijay's jibe at the time, Stalin had said that although he was not present in the legislature, he remained present in the hearts of the people.
Nagendran's latest comments have now drawn criticism from both the Opposition and within the BJP.
Tamil Nadu minister A Rajmohan described the BJP leader's remarks as "uncivilised and inappropriate". He said Vijay had consistently urged his colleagues to maintain political decorum despite provocations and personal attacks.
Former BJP state president K Annamalai also criticised Nagendran's comments, saying they had crossed the limits of political civility.
Annamalai said questioning the government and engaging in political disagreements were legitimate aspects of democratic discourse, but personal attacks involving a leader's family, particularly his mother, were unacceptable.
He described such remarks as a regressive and "third-rate" form of politics and said such conduct should not be encouraged among the younger generation.
The complaint has now put the remarks under police scrutiny, with the complainant seeking preservation of the available digital evidence and appropriate action under the law.
