Amaravati, Aug 16: Two persons died and two others went missing after a car carrying them plunged into a canal in Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari district, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night when the car reportedly lost control and fell into the Narsapuram canal near Itempudi in Irgavaram mandal.

Four occupants of the car went missing, while one person managed to escape from the vehicle safely.

Police rushed to the spot and launched a search operation with the help of divers and firefighting personnel. The bodies of two of the missing persons were recovered on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred when the group was travelling to Mori village in East Godavari district after attending a friend's wedding at Peravali village.

The missing persons were identified as Pothula Lakshmi Bhanu (18), Rajaram (17), D. Nagi Reddy (18) and Sai Surya (19).

Firefighting personnel recovered the bodies of Lakshmi Bhanu and Nagi Reddy from the canal on Sunday morning. The bodies were shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.

Rescue personnel also pulled the car out of the canal, while the search continued for the remaining missing persons.

According to the police investigation, the group of youths was heading to Mori village to meet a friend. It was raining in the area when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The occupants were swept away in the canal. One of them managed to cling to a tree and was rescued with the help of local residents.

In a separate incident, a youth drowned in the Nagarjuna Sagar backwaters in Nalgonda district of Telangana.

The incident occurred when a group of friends went on a recreational trip to the Vizag Colony backwaters. They were swimming when one of the youths was swept away in the Krishna River.

After a search lasting more than two hours, local authorities recovered the body of Durga Tirumallesh.
