Kolkata, Aug 16: A fresh complaint has been filed against Kolkata-based businessman and real estate promoter Joy Kamdar, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) earlier this year in connection with alleged illegal land-grabbing cases, police said on Sunday.
Kamdar and his brother Tushar have been accused of cheating a person by allegedly promising to make him a shareholder in their business.
The complaint has been filed against Joy Kamdar and Tushar Kamdar, residents of Ashwini Dutta Road in Kolkata, and their company, Sun Constructions.
According to the complainant, he was promised 25 per cent of the total profit if he arranged to acquire a specific property. Following this assurance, he made arrangements for a housing project on a valuable property on Nepal Bhattacharya Street.
A written agreement was subsequently executed, following which construction work on the property was started and completed.
The complainant alleged that after completion of the construction work, the accused tried to remove him from the project by offering him a small amount of money instead of honouring the agreement. He further alleged that the accused subsequently denied the terms of the agreement.
The complainant alleged that Joy and Tushar had taken possession of the property through betrayal and fraud. A complaint was subsequently lodged alleging criminal conspiracy and cheating, and police have started an investigation.
The development comes a day after Joy Kamdar approached the ED, which is investigating the alleged illegal land-grabbing cases against him, seeking to become an approver in the matter.
According to sources, Kamdar's counsel has also filed a formal application before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Kolkata, where the case is being heard.
It remains unclear whether the ED will accept Kamdar's request or whether the court will grant him approver status. The special PMLA court has given the central agency time until August 25 to convey its decision on the proposal.
The case relates to an alleged illegal land-grabbing nexus involving Kamdar, alleged land mafia kingpin Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu, and former Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Santanu Sinha Biswas.
Kamdar was arrested in April, while Sinha Biswas and Poddar were taken into custody in May.
Investigators have alleged that the trio amassed substantial illegal proceeds through land-grabbing operations.
