Mangalore: 'Pa Go' Award Conferred on Journalist Steven Rego

Mangalore, Mar 26: Journalist Steven Rego was conferred the 'Pa Go' Award instituted by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union at a simple ceremony at the Press Club here on Monday March 26.

Rego, a sub-editor Kannada daily 'Vijaya Karnataka' won the award for his report  'Nandini Mayavaguva Munna…' that raised raised environment concerns particularly regarding river Nandini.

Addressing the gathering, chief guest Umanath Kotian, president of Tulu Sahitya Academy, lauded Rego's effort  and called upon the journalists to pay more attention to rural areas and bring their problems to the attention of the authorities as well as public.

"Journalism is a field which brings change in society. Padyana Gopalakrishna (PaGo) was a journalist with values, hence he is the ideal role model for young journalist," he said.

The panel of judges comprised Nagaveni Manchi, Paramananda Salian and Nandagopal.

The cash prize which was given along with the award was sponsored by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade.

Rego has been working as sub-editor and correspondent at the city bureau of Vijaya Karnataka, Kannada daily, for the past five years. He did his early schooling from Kodimbady Higher Primary School and graduation from St Philomena College, Puttur.

He is a post graduate in mass communications and journalism from Mangalore University, and the eldest son of Ignatius Rego and Hilda Rego residing in Darandakukku in Puttur.

Savitri Gopalakrishna, wife of renowned journalist the late Padyana Gopalakrishna in whose name the award has been instituted, president of DK working journalists' union P B Harish Rai and others were present along with Rego's family members.

Former union president Ravindranath Shetty welcomed the gathering.
