Udupi, Aug 24: A notorious gangster and key accused in the David D'Souza shootout case, Anuj Patil, was shot in the leg by the police after he assaulted personnel and attempted to escape from custody near Hebri.
The incident occurred when the police were bringing Patil to Hebri. According to sources, the accused tried to escape by physically assaulting the police personnel. During the scuffle, he attempted to snatch and fire the weapon belonging to the Kollur police sub-inspector. In retaliation, Kundapur police sub-inspector Nanja Naik opened fire, hitting the accused in his leg to bring the situation under control.
Patil was immediately shifted to the Udupi district hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment. He is accused of masterminding the logistics of the shootout by sending the shooters, Raju and his team, to carry out the contract.
A native of Bihar, Anuj Patil is a highly notorious gangster who primarily operated out of Mumbai and had been absconding since 2017. Due to his extensive involvement in organized crime, the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) has been invoked against him in Maharashtra.
He has a massive criminal record, with a total of 11 cases registered against him across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, and Karnataka. Notably, 10 out of these 11 cases have been booked under the Arms Act.
