Mangaluru, Aug 24: Carmel School, organised a kindergarten parent orientation programme on Saturday, August 22. The programme was organised with the aim of guiding and sensitising parents on the importance of creating a positive, supportive and disciplined environment for the overall development of young children.
The programme began with the receiving of the guest, followed by a prayer song rendered by the kindergarten teachers. The parents were then welcomed, and Dr Preethi Keerthi D’Souza, the resource person for the session, was introduced.
Dr Preethi Keerthi D’Souza conducted an informative and engaging input session on positive parenting and the role of parents in the early years of a child’s life. She emphasised that children learn not only from what parents teach them but also from what they observe in their everyday lives.

She highlighted the importance of maintaining punctuality and a proper sleep routine for children. Parents were encouraged to establish healthy routines and help children gradually become responsible for their own daily activities. She stressed that parents should guide children in completing their tasks while also giving them the independence to do things by themselves. This helps children develop confidence, responsibility and self-reliance.
An important point discussed during the session was the need for parents to respect teachers and the school in front of their children. Parents were advised not to speak negatively about teachers in the presence of their children, as such comments can influence the child's attitude towards teachers and learning. Instead, parents and teachers should work together as partners for the child's well-being and development.
Dr Preethi also spoke about the importance of spending quality time with children. She introduced the idea of giving children ‘Three meaningful minutes’ at different times of the day:
1) Three minutes in the morning: Parents can help children begin the day positively by encouraging them to brush their teeth, make their bed and pack their school bag. Gradually, children should be encouraged to take responsibility for these activities independently.
2) Three minutes after school: Parents can encourage children to keep their school bag in its proper place and spend a few quiet minutes talking to them about their day. She emphasised the importance of simply listening to children and allowing them to share their experiences.
3) Three minutes at night: Parents were encouraged to spend a few minutes with their children at bedtime, especially through storytelling and meaningful conversation. This simple routine can strengthen the bond between parents and children and make children feel loved, secure and valued.
The session also reinforced the importance of giving children time, attention, encouragement, respect and age-appropriate independence, rather than doing everything for them. Parents were encouraged to be patient and consistent while helping their children develop good habits and life skills.
Prize distribution
Following the input session, the prize distribution ceremony was held for the ‘Cooking without fire’ competition, organised for the dad and child duo. Prizes were presented to the winners in recognition of their creativity and participation. Certificates were also distributed to all the participants as a token of appreciation for their enthusiastic involvement and efforts in making the competition a success.
After the prize distribution, Sr Rosevera AC, the principal, addressed the gathering. Her words further emphasised the importance of cooperation between parents and the school in nurturing children during their formative years.
The programme concluded with the vote of thanks, followed by the national anthem. Refreshments were served to the parents at the end of the programme.
The kindergarten parent orientation programme was an enriching and meaningful experience for the parents. The session provided valuable insights into positive parenting, healthy routines, independence, communication and the importance of a strong parent-teacher partnership. The programme successfully encouraged parents to become more mindful and active participants in the holistic development of their children.
