Mangaluru, Aug 24: Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS), a constituent college of Nitte (Deemed to be University), celebrated Onam 2026 – ‘Kalhaara 2026’ aligned with SDG 3: Good health and wellbeing, SDG 4: Quality education and SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities with great enthusiasm, showcasing the spirit of tradition, unity, and the harvest festival of Kerala. Nearly 500 students, along with teaching and non-teaching staff members, actively participated, creating an atmosphere of joy, togetherness, and cultural pride.
The celebrations commenced on August 19, with the grand banner reveal ceremony held on the NUINS campus. The theme and title of the Onam celebrations, ‘Kalhaara 2026,’ were officially unveiled amidst excitement and applause from students and faculty members.
The Student Nurses’ Association (SNA), under the guidance of Vicky Priya, SNA advisor, organised the main Onam celebrations on August 22. The programme began with a soulful prayer song rendered by the second-year BSc nursing students, invoking blessings for the occasion. This was followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Jessica.
A special highlight of the event was the inauguration of the SNA Champions Trophy, a rolling trophy instituted to encourage active student participation in SNA activities throughout the academic year. The trophy will be awarded annually to the batch demonstrating the highest level of involvement and contribution in student activities.
The student nurses’ association extended a warm welcome to Prof (Dr) Sabitha Nayak, principal, NUINS, who graced the occasion as the chief dignitary. In her presidential address, Dr Sabitha Nayak emphasised the cultural significance of Onam and encouraged students to actively participate in extracurricular and cultural activities that foster teamwork, leadership, and holistic development.
The formal programme was followed by vibrant cultural performances, with students from various batches presenting energetic group dances and cultural displays that captivated the audience. Their enthusiasm and creativity added colour and excitement to the celebration.
Several entertaining games and recreational activities were organised for both students and faculty members, promoting interaction and enjoyment. A much-awaited competition, ‘Traditional Kerala attire,’ was conducted to recognise the best-dressed participants. Winners were selected in the Maran and Manga categories, with three prizes awarded in each category.
One of the most cherished moments of the celebration was the traditional Onam Sadhya, where students, faculty, and staff members came together to enjoy an authentic festive feast. The celebration concluded with the rhythmic beats of Chenda Melam, which filled the campus with festive energy and excitement. Students enthusiastically participated in the festivities, reflecting the true spirit of Onam through unity, cultural appreciation, and joyful celebration.
The Onam celebration at NUINS served as a memorable occasion that strengthened bonds among students and staff while preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
