Mangaluru, Aug 25: The excise police busted a racket involved in the illegal smuggling of liquor from Goa to Kerala via Mangaluru, arresting two persons.
The arrested accused have been identified as the car's owner and driver, Basavaraju Bovi, and Nagaveni Nayaka.
Acting on a definitive tip-off about the illegal transportation of liquor from Goa without a valid permit, a special excise squad intercepted a Swift Dzire car. The officials seized the vehicle along with 438 litres of Goa liquor.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Mangaluru division excise joint commissioner Balakrishna C H and the direction of Dakshina Kannada excise deputy commissioner Bindushree.
The special team comprised Mangaluru sub-division deputy superintendent Gayathri C H, Bantwal sub-division deputy superintendent Santhosh Modagi, Bantwal taluk zone excise inspector Lakshman Shivanagi, Talapady check-post inspector Dattaguru Athani, sub-inspectors Jayappa Shivashankar and Abhishek, and constable Prakash.
A case has been registered by inspector Sunitha of the joint commissioner's office, and further investigations are underway.
