Udupi, Aug 28: The Town police have arrested two accused for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 5 lac by falsely claiming that the complainant’s deceased son had outstanding dues from a diamond business and threatening to trouble the family if the money was not paid.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sajid of Santhosh Nagar and Syed Saif Ahmed (40) of Kunigal taluk in Tumakuru district.
On July 2, an unidentified person called the complainant on WhatsApp in Hindi and demanded Rs 5 lac, claiming, “Your son Ajith Padiyar had done diamond business with me and you have to pay the outstanding amount of Rs 5 lac.” The complainant, however, informed the caller that his son Ajith had died eight years ago and refused to pay the money.
The accused did not stop there. They also called the complainant’s second son, Amit, who was in Dubai, and threatened to trouble his elder brother’s wife, who was in the hometown, if the Rs 5 lac was not paid.
A complaint was subsequently registered at Udupi Town police station.
Police operation and arrests: Under the guidance of Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, IPS, additional SP Sudhakar Naik and DySP Belliyappa, a special team was formed under the leadership of Udupi Town police station inspector Mahesh Prasad P.
The team comprising investigating officer (PSI-2) Ratnakar K. and personnel Prasanna C, Jeevan Kumar, Mallaiah Hiremath and Hemanth Kumar succeeded in arresting the accused on July 20 and August 26.
The accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
