Mangaluru, Aug 30: Mount Carmel Central School, Maryhill, celebrated National Sports Day with a vibrant three-day sports programme from August 27 to 29, promoting fitness, teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship among students.

The celebrations culminated in a special Sports Day assembly on August 29 for the senior students, organised by the Health and Wellness Club to highlight the significance of National Sports Day. The programme began with a floral tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, honouring his remarkable contribution to Indian sports, particularly hockey.

A sports pledge, led by sports minister Jesnia Correa, was also administered, with students pledging to participate actively in sports and maintain physical fitness. The celebrations continued with a lively Zumba session in which all the students participated enthusiastically.

Adding to the festive spirit, a group of students took part in a cycle rally through the Maryhill locality, spreading awareness about fitness, healthy living and the importance of regular physical activity.

In her message, principal Sr Melissa congratulated and thanked the students who had brought laurels to the institution through their outstanding performances and victories in various inter-school sporting events. She then emphasised the importance of National Sports Day and encouraged students to make the best use of the sports facilities and opportunities provided by the school.

On August 27 and 28, students enthusiastically participated in a variety of indigenous games, including Kabaddi for boys, Lagori for girls, and Tug of War for both boys and girls. A 29-time basketball challenge was also organised, with students competing to achieve the highest number of consecutive counts, adding an element of excitement and friendly competition.

The primary section also joined the celebrations through a range of lively and engaging activities. The day began with a special morning assembly on the theme ‘National Sports Day,’ conducted by the students of grade 4 D. Through the assembly, the students highlighted the significance of the occasion and encouraged their peers to develop a positive attitude towards sports and physical well-being.

The young learners subsequently participated in Zumba, yoga and Mass PT, along with a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational games. The activities provided opportunities for joyful participation while fostering teamwork, cooperation, coordination and an active spirit among the students.

The three-day fest served as a meaningful reminder that sports and physical activity are integral to a healthy, balanced and fulfilling life. It inspired students to stay active, embrace healthy habits and carry the values of discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship into their everyday lives.
