Bengaluru, Aug 31: In a major breakthrough in the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) veterinary officers' recruitment scam, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a middleman and BJP leader, Basavaraj Kannale, following the recent apprehension of IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar.
The CID officials produced both the accused before the court on Monday. Following the hearing, the court remanded them to CID custody until September 9.
Basavaraj Kannale, a resident of Donagapura village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district and a syndicate member of Tumkur University, was apprehended by CID officials at the Delhi airport on Sunday. Following the arrest, the investigating team also conducted searches at his residences in Donagapura village and Lecturer Colony in Bhalki.
The ongoing CID investigation has uncovered explosive details, pointing to IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar, who served as the controller of examinations, as the mastermind behind the question paper leak.
According to the probe, Gyanendra Kumar leaked the question papers, which were then sold to candidates by the middleman, Kannale, for a staggering Rs 40 lac each. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the accused attempted to tamper with OMR sheets and delete CCTV footage from the strong room in a bid to destroy evidence.
