The 39-year-old superstar revealed that the recent passing of his father and Argentina's heartbreaking loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final profoundly influenced his decision.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Messi shared a deeply emotional farewell note with his fans. He disclosed that the retirement message was originally penned on July 21, just two days after the 1-0 defeat against Spain, but the recent tragedy involving his father cemented his resolve to finally step away from the game at the international level.
"It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts deeply, but I understand that this is the right time," Messi expressed in his statement.
Stating that he has nothing more left to give to the national team, Messi emphasised the importance of stepping aside to make way for the emerging younger generation of players who deserve their opportunity to shine.
