Mashhad, Sep 2: Four people were killed and more than 10 others injured after a speeding car crashed into a crowd of government and military supporters in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad overnight, Iranian media reported on Wednesday.

According to reports, the vehicle was travelling at high speed when it collided with another car, causing the driver to lose control. The car subsequently hit safety barriers and traffic signs before crashing into the gathering, Noor News reported, citing Razavi Khorasan Province traffic police chief Mohsen Mousa-Abadi.

The driver was arrested following the incident. Mousa-Abadi said initial checks found the driver in an abnormal state, although he did not provide further details about the person’s condition.

Authorities have classified the incident as a traffic accident and said they have so far found no evidence suggesting a political motive.

The gathering was reportedly part of a series of events organised by supporters of Iran’s Islamic Republic and its armed forces. Such gatherings have been held regularly since the outbreak of the war between Iran and the United States in late February.
