Mashhad, Sep 3: Four people were killed and more than 10 injured after a car crashed into a crowd of government and military supporters in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad overnight, according to multiple Iranian media reports.

The vehicle was travelling at high speed when it collided with another car, causing the driver to lose control. The car then struck safety barriers and traffic signs before crashing into the crowd, Noor News reported, citing Mohsen Mousa-Abadi, head of traffic police in Razavi Khorasan province.

Reuters reported that the driver, who has since been arrested, was found to be in an abnormal state during initial checks, Mousa-Abadi said, without elaborating on the driver’s condition.

Authorities have classified the incident as a traffic accident and said they have so far found no evidence indicating a political motive.

The gathering was reportedly part of an ongoing series of events organised by supporters of the Islamic Republic and its armed forces. Such events have been held regularly since the war with the United States broke out in late February.
