Bengaluru, Sep 5: In a special announcement on Teachers’ Day, chief minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday said teachers across Karnataka can henceforth use 'Tr' (Teacher) as a respectful title before their names.
Similar to how doctors use 'Dr', engineers 'Er' and professors 'Prof' before their names, teachers in the state will now be permitted to use 'Tr' as an honorific, Shivakumar said.
Calling the decision a recognition of the selfless service rendered by teachers to society, the chief minister urged all teachers in Karnataka to proudly use the title 'Tr' before their names from now on.
“Behind every individual who contributes to nation-building, there is a teacher who helped shape that person,” Shivakumar said in a post on X. He noted that more than one crore teachers across India, including around 4.5 lac teachers in Karnataka, work every day to shape the minds, personalities and futures of children.
Whether it is a doctor who treats illnesses, an engineer who helps build the nation, a farmer who provides food, an official who serves society, an entrepreneur who drives innovation or a leader who guides society, the contribution of a teacher can be found behind every such journey, he said.
Teachers are often the first to recognise a child's potential and instil confidence by telling them, “You can achieve it,” the chief minister said.
On Teachers’ Day, the Karnataka government has taken this significant decision to honour the invaluable contribution of teachers, Shivakumar said, calling on all teachers in the state to use 'Tr' with pride.
He said the title represents the lifelong, selfless service of teachers and is more than just an honorific.
'Tr' is a symbol of society’s gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to shaping the lives of others, Shivakumar said, adding that a society that respects its teachers will have an equally bright future.
The chief minister paid tribute to every teacher who showed the way, helped shape conduct, opened the sky of possibilities for dreams and was the first to believe in the abilities of their students.
'Tr' is a deserving recognition of the selfless service rendered by teachers, Shivakumar said.
