New Delhi, Sep 7: Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Monday interacted with a visiting Myanmar Parliament delegation led by International Relations Committee Chairman Pwint San in New Delhi, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral ties.
Margherita reaffirmed India's commitment to advancing its multifaceted partnership with Myanmar, guided by the key foreign policy priorities of Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
The delegation is visiting New Delhi for capacity-building training at the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), the training and research wing of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
Following the meeting, Margherita posted on X that India remained committed to deepening its multifaceted partnership with Myanmar, building on the two countries' “age-old civilisational and people-to-people ties”.
The cross-party delegation, comprising 30 MPs from six national and nine ethnic parties, arrived in India on September 1 for a capacity-building programme conducted by PRIDE. The visit will continue until September 8.
The Indian Embassy said the delegation would participate in the capacity-building module and hold friendly meetings during its visit.
Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur had earlier highlighted the diverse and youthful composition of the delegation, which includes several young and first-time parliamentarians.
The delegation represents 15 political parties, including USDP, KSPP, NUP, SNDP, PP and PPP, besides ethnic parties representing Naga, Pa-O, Karen, Danu, Inn, Arakan, Zomi, Wa and Kayah communities. It also includes nominated MPs from the Myanmar Armed Forces.
Thakur said the representative composition of the delegation reflected the cross-party consensus in Myanmar's Parliament on maintaining close relations with India.
He said the visit assumes particular significance as it comes in the first year of Myanmar's newly convened Parliament following the General Elections held in December 2025 and January 2026.
“The establishment of new parliamentary institutions represents an important stage in Myanmar's political evolution,” Thakur noted.
The visit also comes after Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing's visit to India earlier this year, his first foreign trip after assuming office as President.
