Mumbai, Sep 10: Mumbai’s electric vehicle population has crossed 77,000, with 77,196 EVs registered in the city, as Maharashtra emerges as the country’s second-largest state in terms of electric vehicle numbers, with around 11.5 lakh EVs.
The figures, released around World EV Day observed on September 9, highlight the growing presence of electric mobility on Mumbai’s roads. Of the city’s total EV population, 40,086 are e-bikes and 30,137 are e-cars, while the remaining vehicles belong to other electric vehicle categories.
Maharashtra’s total EV population stands at around 11.5 lakh, placing it second nationally behind Uttar Pradesh, which has around 18 lakh electric vehicles. Karnataka ranks third with approximately 9 lakh EVs.
E-bikes account for the bulk of Maharashtra’s electric vehicle fleet, with around 9.6 lakh registered across the state. E-cars number more than 1 lakh, while the remaining vehicles comprise other categories.
The state is continuing efforts to strengthen electric mobility, with purchase incentives and subsidies seen as key factors in encouraging EV adoption. Lower battery manufacturing costs could also help reduce vehicle prices and make electric cars more accessible.
A transport analyst from the Mumbai Mobility Forum said enhancing purchase incentives and subsidies, along with reducing battery manufacturing costs, could further bring down vehicle prices and encourage more people to opt for electric cars.
Among Mumbai’s regional transport office areas, Andheri has the highest combined count of e-BOVs and pure EVs in the available data, with 11,553 e-BOVs and 8,836 pure EVs, taking its total to 20,389.
Borivli has 10,989 e-BOVs and 6,218 pure EVs, with a combined total of 17,207. Wadala has 8,830 e-BOVs and 8,860 pure EVs, while Tardeo has 13,608 e-BOVs and 8,302 pure EVs.
The figures point to a substantial presence of electric vehicles across Mumbai’s major RTO jurisdictions, with electric two-wheelers and cars contributing significantly to the city’s growing EV population.
Maharashtra’s EV fleet of around 11.5 lakh places it behind only Uttar Pradesh nationally, while Mumbai alone has crossed the 77,000 mark in registered electric vehicles.
