Mangaluru, Sep 11: In a major push to make up for lost academic time caused by torrential monsoon downpours across Dakshina Kannada, the deputy director of the Department of School Education and Literacy has instructed all primary and high schools in the district to switch to full-day classes every Saturday, starting from the second week of September (September 12).

Continuous heavy rainfall earlier this season had forced the district administration to declare over 10 days of unexpected emergency holidays in several taluks. The prolonged closures left educators facing a significant curriculum backlog, severely delaying syllabus completion schedules across both government and private institutions.

Tailored recovery plans

To tackle the academic setback, departmental officials issued explicit directives mandating the immediate utilisation of upcoming weekends alongside special remedial sessions.

Under the new guidelines, institutions must extend their traditional half-day Saturday routine into complete, full-day academic schedules starting 12 September. School administrations have also been instructed to conduct special classes and leverage remaining general calendar holidays to ensure the lost syllabus hours are fully covered.

While individual school management teams have been granted the operational autonomy to map out their specific catch-up timetables at their own level, officials strictly warned that proper documentation, attendance records, and logs of all extra classes must be systematically maintained for departmental inspection.

Both government and private school authorities across Mangaluru and surrounding taluks have already circulated the revised working schedules to students and parents to ensure a smooth transition starting this Saturday.
