Mangaluru: St Aloysius University holds one-day national seminar on contemporary banking

Mangaluru, Sep 12: The Department of Business Administration, School of Business & Management, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) organised a one-day national seminar on Contemporary banking ecosystem: Innovation, protection, governance and sustainability on September 10 in L.F. Rasquinha Hall of the University.

Prof Shacheendran V, Vice-principal and head of postgraduate department of commerce, GPM Government College, Manjeshwaram was the inaugurator and keynote speaker. Varun Jain, founder and CEO of Miles Foundation, Bengaluru was the guest of honour. Dr (Col) Praveen Martis, SJ, vice-chancellor of the University presided over the programme. Dr Ronald Nazareth, registrar of the University presided over the programme. Dr Arati Shanbhag, controller of examinations, Chethan Shettigar, assistant dean of business & management, Sonal Steevan Lobo, HOD of BBA, Dr Vinola Sandra Sequeira and Kavitha M, convenors of the seminar were on the dais.

Prof Shacheendran in his speech spoke on the contemporary banking, its core functions, traditional banking & eco system in the contemporary world, and sustainable banking. He advised the participants on to know about the market rates and ensure safe banking.

Varun Jain in his speech briefed the history of banking, a trust of business, and contemporary challenges in the banking field. He elaborated how the financial crisis arises if he bank fails then the entire trust is failed and the economy collapses. Trust is most important in banking sector. He also spoke on the recent technological process of banking, instant money transfers, and how the role of AI took a major role in banking to trigger the fraudsters. Technology innovation and banking automation has been adopted in the contemporary banking system, he added.

Dr(Col) Praveen Martis in his presidential remarks spoke about the fast changing growth in banking sector. He said that Mangalore started the banking hub more than a century ago and the banking system is technologically transparent.

Following the keynote address, there was a panel discussion titled ‘The Contemporary banking ecosystem: Innovation, protection, governance and sustainability,’ which offered an engaging forum to discuss the swiftly evolving landscape of the banking and financial industry. The discussion brought together three distinguished banking professionals — Tejashvini V C - deputy general manager, Union Bank of India, S H Visweswaraiah, mentor and advisor, MCC Bank and Krishna Mohan Mucharla, deputy general manager, State Bank of India — who shared valuable insights drawn from their extensive professional experience. The panel explored how technologies such as UPI, digital banking, artificial intelligence, fintech, digital payments and data-driven decision-making are reshaping the banking ecosystem.

A major focus of the discussion was the need to balance innovation with customer protection, cybersecurity, privacy and responsible governance. The panel also examined the challenges of ensuring that technological advancement remains inclusive and customer-centric. The role of strong governance and regulatory compliance in creating trust and enabling responsible innovation was highlighted.

The session concluded with a strong message that the future of banking should not be defined by technology alone. Innovation must be accompanied by protection, supported by effective governance and directed towards a sustainable and inclusive financial system. The panel discussion was insightful, thought-provoking and highly relevant to the evolving needs of the contemporary banking sector.

Carrel Sharal Pereira compered the programme. Kavitha M extended a warm welcome to the gathering. Dr Arati Shanbhag highlighted the theme and significance of the seminar. Dr Vinola Sandra Sequeira proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, presenters, and organizers for their valuable support. The programme concluded with the national anthem.

The panel discussion was followed by student research paper presentations, with 281 participants in attendance. A total of 18 research papers were presented across three tracks, covering diverse and relevant contemporary themes. The academic sessions concluded with the presentation of the Best Paper Awards, recognizing outstanding research contributions and presentations.
