Udupi, Sep 13: The iconic Tiger Circle entrance of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, was shining in a radiant gold hue on Saturday evening to observe international childhood cancer awareness month. Organized in association with Access Life Assistance Foundation, the symbolic illumination ceremony brought together children with cancer, their caregivers, oncologists, healthcare personnel, students, and citizens to express collective solidarity with childhood cancer warriors and highlight the vital need for early clinical diagnosis, effective therapy and curability associated with childhood cancers.
The decision to light the prominent institutional landmark in gold carries deep clinical and social significance. Gold is the universally recognized awareness color for childhood cancer as it represents precious and treasured metal, which are equivalent to the children. Because childhood cancers cannot be prevented through adult-style lifestyle changes, public awareness remains the first line of defense. The striking visual tribute serves as a community-wide beacon to dismantle misconceptions, encourage parents and primary practitioners to promptly spot subtle warning signs, and advocate for universal access to advanced medical care.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Vasudeva Bhat K, professor and head of the department of pediatric oncology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, highlighted the critical role of timely medical intervention and said, “Unlike adult cancers, childhood malignancies cannot be picked up by screening, hence timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment remain the most vital clinical intervention. When identified early and treated with standardized, multimodal protocols, more than 80% of children can be completely cured and go on to lead productive, healthy lives.
Through our association with Access Life Assistance foundation, our endeavor is to ensure that no child is denied advanced curative treatment due to logistical or financial hurdles.”
Representatives from Access Life assistance foundation underscored the importance of comprehensive care, noting that clinical treatment must be supported by safe, hygienic accommodation, proper nutrition, and emotional support for underprivileged families navigating lengthy hospital stays far from home.
The evening concluded with attendees pinning on symbolic gold ribbons and pledging to strengthen early referral systems so that every child diagnosed with cancer receives timely, equitable care.
