Mangaluru, Sep 13: Karnataka is currently grappling with unannounced load shedding as soaring temperatures and a severe monsoon deficit push the state's daily electricity demand to 19,140 MW against a total generation of 18,889 MW. Meanwhile, specific areas in Mangaluru will also face a scheduled power cut on September 15 due to routine feeder maintenance.

The state is facing a daily shortfall of 251 MW. The sudden spike in electricity usage is driven by the lack of rain and increased reliance on air conditioners and coolers. Compounding the issue are technical glitches in generators at the Raichur (RTPS), Ballari (BTPS), and Yellapur thermal power plants, along with a reduced supply from the Central Generating Stations (CGS).

Officials note that the current disruptions are temporary. To manage the crisis, authorities are attempting to balance supply during peak consumption hours (6 am to 8 am, and 6 pm to 9 pm). Furthermore, under a prior agreement, Karnataka is obligated to return power to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during the monsoon—power that was borrowed during the summer—adding to the current strain as reservoirs hold back water to prevent severe shortages next summer.

Power supply will be suspended from 10 am to 5 pm due to maintenance work on the Ekkur New, Gorigudda, Naguri, and Pumpwell feeders.
