Karkala, Sep 14: An attempt to illegally cut and transport trees from Kumki land in the reserve forest near Mutlupadi Padu Darkhasu, within the Kudremukh National Park limits, was reported here.

More than nine large-sized trees, including Kiralu Bogi (Malabar ironwood) and Hebbalasu (wild jackfruit), estimated to be worth over Rs 10 lac, were cut down. The perpetrators allegedly attempted to transport the timber in a lorry with the assistance of a crane. However, local residents objected to the activity, and those involved reportedly had no documents authorising the tree felling. They abandoned the cut trees and fled the spot.

According to local residents, the location is approximately 50 metres from the Anti-Poaching Camp.

After photographs of the felled trees circulated on social media, Forest Department officials visited the spot and seized the timber.

"Based on CCTV footage, we have already obtained information about the lorries and cranes involved. A case will be registered and appropriate action will be taken," said Karkala RFO Arun.
