Gurugram, Sep 14: Gurugram Police have arrested a 24-year-old parking attendant in connection with the alleged assault of retired Indian Air Force Group Captain and Kargil War veteran Amit Kumar Gupta at Magnum Global Park in Sector 58.
The accused has been identified as Deepak Mavi, a resident of Kot village in Haryana's Faridabad district.
The incident occurred on September 10 following an alleged dispute over parking at the commercial complex. According to police and Gupta's complaint, the parking attendant allegedly attacked him with an iron pipe during the altercation, leaving him seriously injured.
Gupta has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gurugram since the incident. He has alleged that he suffered a serious head injury and fractured his elbow in the attack. He was taken by ambulance to Medanta Hospital after the incident, where he underwent surgery and had a plate inserted to stabilise the fractured elbow.
An FIR was registered at Sector 65 police station on September 13 based on Gupta's complaint. The case was initially registered against unidentified persons under Sections 115(2), 126(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said additional sections could be added depending on the doctors' opinion.
According to Gupta's complaint, he had gone to Gonzo Restaurant at Magnum Global Park with his family for dinner on the evening of September 10. At around 8 pm, he left his family at the restaurant and went to park his car.
Gupta alleged that parking staff directed him to different parking areas, including valet, basement and multi-level parking, and made him move around for some time before allegedly refusing to park his vehicle.
He further alleged that while he was reversing his car, a parking attendant attempted to break the vehicle's front window. When Gupta got out and resisted, the attendant allegedly returned with an iron rod and struck him first on the hand and then on the head.
"I was covered in blood from the attack," Gupta said in his complaint, alleging that the attendant first struck his hand before hitting him on the head.
Gupta also alleged that security guards and other parking staff were present but did not intervene. He said he called the police helpline, but police did not reach the spot for around half an hour. According to Gupta, a restaurant chef intervened and helped prevent the situation from escalating further.
Gupta has also alleged that the medico-legal case (MLC) report prepared at the hospital did not accurately record his injuries, including the bleeding from his head and the injury to his elbow. He had further alleged that he was not receiving adequate assistance from the police.
Police said Gupta had served in the Indian Air Force and was part of the force's 'Operation Safed Sagar' during the 1999 Kargil War.
Following registration of the FIR, police launched an investigation into the alleged assault and arrested Mavi. The circumstances leading to the altercation and the alleged involvement, if any, of other persons present at the scene are being investigated.
The allegations against the accused are subject to the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings.
