Karkala, Sep 15: A male sambar deer, estimated to be between one-and-a-half and two years old, was found dead near the children's park adjacent to the taluk office here on Tuesday, September 15.
The forest department suspects that the animal might have strayed into the area from the forest limits adjoining Kukkandoor village. The incident came to light when morning walkers noticed the carcass and immediately alerted the authorities.
Forest department personnel visited the spot and conducted an inspection. Minor injuries were observed on the deer's head and horns. According to the preliminary assessment by veterinarians, the animal might have died of a cardiac arrest triggered by panic.
Karkala range forest officer (RFO) Arun stated that a post-mortem examination is being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death, and a clearer picture will emerge once the report is received.
