Bogotá, Sep 16: Colombia football stalwart James Rodriguez has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an illustrious career with the national team.

Rodriguez announced his decision in an emotional social media message to fans, with his final appearance for Colombia coming at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Colombia's campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a defeat to Switzerland.

“The moment has come. Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear, and every dream we shared together. Representing the Colombian national team was one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you, Colombia, and forever,” Rodriguez wrote on X, according to Goal.com.

Rodriguez rose to global prominence during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals and won the Golden Boot. His performances helped Colombia reach the quarterfinals.

The former Real Madrid midfielder subsequently represented Colombia at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups, remaining an important figure for the national team across multiple generations.

Rodriguez finished his international career with 131 appearances, 31 goals and 43 assists for Colombia. Across his four World Cup campaigns, he scored six goals and provided four assists.

He also played a significant role in Colombia's Copa America campaigns. Rodriguez helped the team reach the final of the 2024 edition, where they lost to Argentina, and was part of the side that finished runners-up in the 2016 tournament.

At the Copa America, he made 14 appearances, scoring once and registering eight assists. His performances over the years established him as one of the most recognisable figures in Colombian football.
