Mangaluru, Sep 17: A 60-year-old woman in the city was duped of Rs 13.74 lac by cyber fraudsters under the pretext of high returns in stock market trading. A case regarding the incident has been registered at the cyber crime police station in Mangaluru.
According to the complaint, the woman was browsing WhatsApp on her mobile phone on May 28 when she received a message from an unknown number. The sender claimed to represent a company and promised substantial profits through share market investments. Subsequently, the fraudster called her, explaining the investment scheme and convincing her that she could double her money.

Believing the caller, the woman transferred the funds in phases to various bank accounts provided by the unknown individuals, starting from May 28.
The fraud came to light when the woman attempted to withdraw her invested money and the profits but was unable to do so. She tried contacting the phone numbers provided by the strangers, but her calls went unanswered. Growing suspicious, she approached the police to file a complaint, where it was confirmed that she had been scammed under the guise of a lucrative investment.
How to stay safe?
Vigilance is the key to avoiding such scams. If you receive such calls, never fall for the trap. Remember, police officials never initiate cases online or ask for money.
Most importantly, the term “digital arrest” is fabricated by scammers and does not exist in Indian law. If someone threatens you with it, it is undoubtedly a scam.
Additionally, never share bank details, OTPs, or other sensitive information over phone calls or messages, regardless of the caller’s claims. If you suspect a scam, report it to the authorities and your bank immediately. Quick action can help prevent further losses.
