Cardiff, Sep 18: England defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20I at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on September 17 to take an unassailable lead in the ongoing series.
The match also saw veteran England batter Jos Buttler create T20 history. Opening the innings, Buttler scored 30 runs while chasing Sri Lanka’s target of 146 and became the first player to reach 15,000 runs in T20 cricket.
Buttler surpassed West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, who had accumulated 14,999 T20 runs.
Sri Lanka posted 145 in the first innings, with Charith Asalanka top-scoring with 31 runs. England’s Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer were among the key contributors with the ball.
England chased down the target comfortably, with Tom Banton remaining unbeaten on 52 and Harry Brook contributing 23 runs. Buttler added 30 as England reached the target to seal a seven-wicket victory.
After the match, Brook praised his team’s performance and highlighted the contributions of Overton and Player of the Match Liam Dawson.
“Tonight was a special performance again. Very clinical,” Brook said during the post-match presentation.
