Mangaluru, Sep 18: Veteran teacher and retired educator Benny D’Souza, 92, passed away at her residence in Asaigoli on Thursday morning.
D’Souza had served as a teacher at Vidyodaya Higher Primary School, Asaigoli, for nearly 44 years. In recognition of her dedicated service to education, she received the State Best Teacher Award from the then Karnataka chief minister Gundu Rao in 1982.
Popularly known as ‘Benny Teacher’ in the Asaigoli area, she was remembered for her selfless service to students as well as the poor and underprivileged sections of society. She played a significant role in educating several children from the surrounding areas.


Many of her former students went on to hold prominent positions in government service, politics and social service, while continuing to contribute to the welfare of the underprivileged.
Benni D’Souza’s contribution to education and society has been widely remembered by the people of Asaigoli and surrounding areas.
Mortal remains will be brought to the residence on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 pm. followed by the funeral procession at 3:45 pm for Our Lady of Mercy Church, Panir where the Requiem Mass will be celebrated.
