Haridwar, Sep 18: Surendra Koli, who was accused in the infamous Nithari killings case, was allegedly found dead by suicide at his tea stall in Haridwar on Friday.

Koli, who had reportedly been living in Haridwar and running a tea business for the past few days, was found hanging inside a rented kiosk opposite Lal Mata Temple in the Sapt Sarovar area.

Police received information about a man found dead at a tea stall on Sapt Sarovar Road and rushed to the spot. The deceased was identified as Koli, a native of Mangrukhhal village in Bhikyasen, Almora district. His family members in Almora have been informed.

City Kotwal Kundan Singh Rana confirmed Koli’s identity and said police had inspected the scene and were gathering information from people in the surrounding area. No suicide note was found during the preliminary examination.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the death were being investigated from all possible angles. The exact cause of death will be established after the investigation and post-mortem examination.

Koli came into the spotlight after the Nithari killings case surfaced in 2006. He was convicted in several cases during the lengthy legal proceedings, but was later acquitted in multiple cases by the Allahabad High Court.

In July 2025, the Supreme Court upheld his acquittal in 12 cases related to the killings. In November 2025, the apex court set aside his conviction in the final pending case and ordered his acquittal and immediate release.
