Bangalore: 'Made-Snana' will be Banned in Two Months - CM

Bangalore, Mar 29 (PTI): After months of public debate, Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today announced that 'Made-Snana', a controversial ritual practised in some temples of the State for centuries, would be banned in two months.

"The practice of Made-Snana will be stopped within two months," Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said in a suo motu statement in the Legislative Council, where Tontadarya (BJP) raised a question on various temple superstitions being practised in the State.

Made-Snana is a ritual where people roll on plantain leaves off which Brahmins have had their meals, to fulfil 'Harake' (an offering made for a wish) and also with the belief that it would help in curing skin diseases.

The practice, particularly in Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district, has become an issue of intense debate in the State, with sections of the society seeing the ritual as an "atrocity against Dalits", while supporters maintain that people perform it voluntarily with certain beliefs, which can't be questioned.

About 100 swamijis heading various mutts in the state had congregated at Freedom Park earlier this week to protest against age-old superstitions, especially Made-Snana, and demanded a ban on them.

Informing the House that he has already started a dialogue with people concerned, the Chief Minister said he is in contact with pontiff of Pejawar mutt Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji and others in an attempt to stop the ritual.

By banning madesnana, DVS is risking his chair and CM post as RSS and swamis are not in its favour. Madesnana is a symbol of superiority of Brahimis over others in Hindu society... Will brahmin tolerate this?????

If Made- Snana is banned, BJP will suffer heavily. Walking on firewood too is dangerous for life, still why it's not bann?
Ban Rave Party's, watching porn videos, corruption, land scams, rape, kissing, resort politics, that's what public wants but not to intetefere in religious beliefs of Hindu Brothers. DVS is making mistake. Dr. V. S. Acharya too said, he will bann madesnana.
These Swamijis are chameleons Tommorow if public want to do it forcibly, the will change there stand.

The Ritual should not be banned instead Brahmins should be made to roll on the leftover banana leaves consumed by dalits.

I don't believe such traditions exist in karnataka. Was the Dalit community in Karnataka sleeping all these years??? The govt should ban this ritual immediately and violations against this ban should be faced with lifetime Imprisonment. Daijiworld please don't publish such articels as it showcases a bad image about india . I hope BBC, CNN,AL JAZEERA are not aware of the Made Snana

The dirty congress men unnecessarily creating chaos. Why did not they ban MADE-SNANA in last 60 years? It shows they were in deep slumber from last 60 years. Now since BJP is in power, they have woken up. Useless rogues..

Thanks to DVS for considering banning it. DVS is a visionary leader. He is the 2nd best Chief Minister in India after Narendra Modi.

Please look closely at the photo of bottom person... he is a brahmin & not dalit as claimed by dalits.

If you go to Subrahmanya & see the event you will find people indifferent of caste practise the ritual & not only by lower caste. This is purely act of voluntary & not act of compultion. Leave the practise to ones own will & do not ban by force. It is faith of devotees & India Constitution assures right of ones own faith.

Worshiping Snake god may be absured for non-Hindus, but for most of Hindus it is sacred. So let devotees follow their own faith & never ever try to ban or impose ban.

    Jai Kukkeshree !...

DVS, CM of Karnataka might unwillingly, made a statement for a controversial issue of 'Made' snana but it is unlikely to implement as we saw pro and counter agitation for the sensational issue like Made snana .However, there is division in the issue which is age old and matter of faith/ belief.Anyway, Govt came out with concrete decision which might ease the tension a bit.
