Mangaluru, Sep 19: In a remarkable act of compassion, the family of 50-year-old Prakash Acharya, a resident of Beeri, Maduru Site, Kotekar in Ullal taluk, has donated his organs following his brain death, giving new hope to patients in need of life-saving transplants.

Prakash Acharya sustained a severe head injury after falling in front of his house on September 14. He was admitted to Wenlock District Hospital, where the brain death declaration committee conducted a comprehensive evaluation. After completing the prescribed brain death assessment, he was declared brain dead on September 17.

On Saturday September 19, the family consented to organ donation, enabling the transplantation of two kidneys and two corneas. The KMC Manipal team retrieved the two kidneys, which will benefit two patients undergoing dialysis. The KMC Attavar team retrieved the two corneas, potentially restoring vision to two individuals.

The successful organ donation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the medical, nursing, surgical, forensic medicine and support teams at Wenlock District Hospital, along with the SOTTO and KMC teams.

The hospital expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the family for taking the courageous decision to donate Prakash Acharya’s organs and described the gesture as a gift that could transform several lives.

Dr Shivaprakash D S, district surgeon and superintendent of Wenlock District Hospital, paid tribute to the family’s noble decision and appreciated all the teams involved in completing the organ donation process.

“One decision can save many lives. Organ donation is a gift beyond life,” he said.
