Bengaluru, Sep 20: Karnataka has made significant progress in developing infrastructure for electric vehicles, emerging as a leading state in the country's electric mobility sector. The state secured the third position with 73 points in the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025 released by NITI Aayog.

With this achievement, Karnataka is recognised among the major states making strides in the electric mobility sector and has been included in the 'top performers' list alongside Maharashtra.

According to NITI Aayog, Delhi secured the first position with 84 points, while Maharashtra followed in second place with 78 points. Karnataka took the third spot with 73 points, followed by Chandigarh with 71 points and Goa with 65 points.

The index classifies states and union territories scoring 65 points or above under the 'top performers' category.

In the charging infrastructure readiness segment, Karnataka secured the first position in the country by scoring 97 points. Energy department officials stated that this reflects the state's remarkable progress in developing the necessary charging infrastructure to promote the use of electric vehicles.

Speaking on the development, energy department additional chief secretary Gaurav Gupta said that Karnataka's electric mobility initiatives include Bescom's EV Mitra, a unified electric vehicle charging application, a single-window clearance system, and an EV accelerator cell.

He highlighted that in 2017, Karnataka became the first state in the country to implement a dedicated electric vehicle policy encompassing vehicle sales, charging infrastructure, and distinct manufacturing zones.

Karnataka accounts for 8.81% of the country's total electric vehicle registrations. The state ranks second, behind Maharashtra, in the registration of electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers. In e-bus registrations, Karnataka holds the third position after Delhi and Maharashtra, he added.
