Jamui, Sep 21: Two Class 10 students, a boy and a girl, were allegedly harassed and assaulted by a group of men while returning from a coaching class in Bihar’s Jamui city on Saturday evening, with a video of the incident later circulating on social media.
According to police, the two minors had visited Madwa Pahad, a popular hill destination in the area. While returning on a scooter, a group of men allegedly stopped them, abused them and forced them to get off the vehicle.
A video purportedly showing the incident shows one of the men grabbing the boy by his shirt collar and attempting to pull him towards the group. The boy, with the help of the girl, managed to free himself, following which the two attempted to flee.
The group allegedly chased the minors. In another part of the video, one of the men is seen grabbing the girl by the neck and lifting her off the ground. The boy intervened and prevented the man from taking her away. The girl was also allegedly subjected to further physical harassment during the confrontation.
The harassment reportedly continued as the two tried to leave the spot on their scooter. The group allegedly forced the minors to apologise and prevented them from leaving for some time. The girl can be heard pleading with the men to let them go and promising that they would not return to the location.
Another member of the group allegedly recorded the incident on a mobile phone. The video was later circulated on social media, prompting outrage and drawing the attention of the police.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation. A senior police officer confirmed the incident and the existence of the video, and said the process of registering an FIR had been initiated.
Police have spoken to both minors and are collecting information about the alleged accused based on their statements. Efforts are underway to identify the persons involved and establish the individual roles of those present during the incident.
Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and other details related to the video. The search for the accused is underway.
