Mangaluru, Sep 21: The Lokayukta police on Monday caught an inspector attached to the Bajpe police station red-handed while he was accepting a bribe from a complainant.

The arrested officer has been identified as Inspector Balakrishna.

According to a press release from the Karnataka Lokayukta, Mangaluru division, a cheating case was recently registered at the Bajpe police station. Inspector Balakrishna had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 to release the money that had been seized from the accused in connection with the case.

The inspector had already collected Rs 15,000 in advance. He was trapped by the Lokayukta police on September 21 while accepting an additional demanded sum of Rs 5,000 from the complainant.

A case had been registered at the Mangaluru Lokayukta police station following the initial complaint regarding the bribe demand. The Lokayukta police have taken the accused officer into custody, and further investigation is currently underway.
