Chennai, Sep 22: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, filling the position left vacant after Stephen Fleming ended his 18-year association with the franchise.
The 47-year-old Zaheer has been handed a one-year contract, with the possibility of an extension, according to The Indian Express.
Zaheer brings extensive experience in coaching and team management. He worked with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022, initially serving as director of cricket operations before taking charge as global head of development.
He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants in 2024 as a mentor and spent one season with the franchise.
Confirming the appointment, CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said Zaheer's playing experience and ability to develop young players would strengthen the team's setup.
“We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise,” she said.
Zaheer's appointment comes after Fleming's departure following an 18-year stint as CSK head coach. Fleming had been associated with the franchise since the inaugural Indian Premier League season and guided the team to multiple IPL titles.
Zaheer, one of India's leading left-arm fast bowlers, represented the country across formats and was part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad.
