Mangaluru, Sep 22: The Kankanady town police intercepted a lorry transporting cattle illegally near the Toyota car showroom in Padil early on Tuesday morning.

Based on a tip-off received during their morning rounds, the Kankanady PSI and staff spotted a brown Eicher lorry heading towards Mangaluru from Adyar at around 6:30 am. The police gave chase and intercepted the vehicle near the showroom.

While the driver remained in the vehicle, another person jumped out and managed to flee the scene.

Upon inspection, the police found the lorry covered with a green tarpaulin. Inside, 17 cattle were found tied up in a cramped and inhumane manner. They were tied tightly to the iron carriage of the lorry with ropes, one on top of the other, with their necks pulled up, causing them extreme distress and breathing difficulties.

The police arrested the driver, identified as Sadiq G (23), a resident of Hunasinakere Road Slum Board, Vishwanath Nagar Layout in Hassan district. The 17 cattle, the lorry, and a mobile phone belonging to Sadiq were seized.

A case has been registered at the Kankanady town police station under sections 11(A) and 11(D) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, section 6 of The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, and section 3(5) of the BNS.

Efforts are currently underway to trace and apprehend the two other accused, identified as Subhan and Rehman, who are absconding. Further investigation is ongoing.
