Jerusalem, Sep 23: The Middle East is facing the risk of a broader escalation as tensions involving Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the Houthis, Hezbollah, Gaza and the West Bank converge, according to Israeli security officials cited by Walla.
The Israeli defence establishment is monitoring multiple arenas and assessing the possibility that deterioration on one front could trigger wider regional instability.
Tensions between the United States and Iran remain a major concern. Israeli officials cited by Walla said mediators had so far failed to make progress between Tehran and Washington. They assessed that Iran was maintaining its position on its nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz, while US President Donald Trump has continued economic pressure and threats against Tehran. Reuters separately reported that Trump said a diplomatic agreement with Iran could be possible after the US midterm elections, while Tehran indicated it was open to discussions over the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions.
Israeli security officials also expressed concern over Iran's ties with regional groups including Hezbollah, the Houthis and pro-Iranian Shiite militias in Iraq. According to the assessment cited by Walla, a decision by Tehran to activate these groups could widen the confrontation.
Saudi Arabia is also facing growing pressure from Houthi attacks. Israeli officials said Riyadh had sought immediate US assistance following attacks affecting the Saudi capital, Mecca and Aramco facilities, as well as developments near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Trump ultimately did not order US strikes against the Houthis, instead offering intelligence and weapons-system assistance, according to the report. Recent Reuters and AP reports have also documented intensified Houthi-Saudi fighting and Houthi advances in Yemen.
Hezbollah, meanwhile, is described as remaining restrained while continuing to develop military capabilities with Iranian support. Israeli forces have also continued strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, according to the report.
In Gaza, negotiations over Hamas disarmament and the transfer of control to a third party have reached an impasse, according to Israeli assessments cited by Walla. Israeli military officials are also discussing continued operations against Hamas infrastructure, while security forces remain on heightened alert along the Yellow Line.
The West Bank is considered another major area of concern for Israeli security officials. The report said growing friction between Israeli and Palestinian communities, alongside nationalist violence, could trigger retaliatory attacks and further instability. Israeli military authorities have reinforced the area with additional battalions and units.
Israeli officials also cited concerns over a possible succession crisis following the eventual departure of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, although senior Central Command officials said there were currently no indications of the reported "turning the guns" scenario.
The Syrian arena is described as relatively quiet, while Israel's borders with Jordan and Egypt remain areas of concern because of weapons-smuggling routes and the possibility of future infiltration.
The Israeli Navy has also expanded its operational preparedness, with additional vessels and broader operational activity as the military prepares for possible developments across the region.
The overall assessment, according to the Israeli security officials cited by Walla, is that the convergence of multiple flashpoints has left the region vulnerable to a wider escalation.
