Washington, Sep 25: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for stronger ties between China and the United States, urging the two countries to nurture friendship and work together to write a new chapter in their bilateral relations.
Addressing a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump at the White House, Xi thanked Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for their hospitality and thoughtful arrangements during his visit.
"Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still. The friendship between the two peoples is a worthy cause that holds great promise. Let us join hands and move forward side by side. Together, let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-US friendship," Xi said.
He also expressed gratitude for the arrangements made for his visit, saying they reflected meticulous care and consideration in every detail. Xi extended greetings to Americans who support stronger bilateral ties.
Recalling Trump's visit to China in May this year, Xi said the two leaders had agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability.
He said Trump's invitation had led to his visit to the United States, marking an important moment in bilateral engagement, with the two presidents exchanging state visits within less than six months.
Xi said the two leaders had held sincere and in-depth discussions and reached a common understanding on several issues, providing new strategic guidance for China-US relations.
During the dinner, Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, and presented the Chinese president with a bald eagle statue.
The approximately three-foot-tall statue was designed by an American artist in collaboration with Trump and Melania Trump.
Presenting the gift, Trump said the bald eagle symbolised the United States and represented the country's free and soaring spirit. He expressed hope that the statue would find a special place in Beijing.
Trump said the two countries represented different systems but shared enduring ties between their people. He added that both leaders could continue building a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations.
