Surat, Sep 25: At least four people were killed after an SUV crashed into a stationary dumper on the Bharatmala Expressway near Kamrej in Gujarat’s Surat district on Friday, police said.
The accident took place near the Tapi overbridge in the Kamrej area when the SUV, travelling from Maharashtra towards Gujarat, rammed into the rear of the dumper that had stopped on the expressway.
All four occupants of the SUV died on the spot, according to police and local sources.
Preliminary information suggested that the dumper had developed an air-pressure problem, following which its driver stopped the heavy vehicle on the road. The SUV, which was approaching from behind, then collided with the stationary dumper, severely damaging its front portion.
The occupants of the SUV belonged to the same family and were reportedly travelling from Mumbai to visit the Shankheshwar temple in Gujarat’s Patan district.
The deceased were identified as Rajiv Jain, Jayanti Doshi, Pravin Jain and Sanjay Khemchand.
Following the accident, traffic movement on the expressway was temporarily disrupted. Personnel from Kamrej police reached the spot after receiving information about the crash and initiated the necessary legal proceedings.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, while the damaged vehicles were removed from the road to restore normal traffic movement.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including how the dumper was positioned on the expressway after the reported technical problem and how the approaching SUV crashed into the stationary vehicle. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
Earlier, on the same expressway, four members of a family from Khambhat were killed on April 8 after their car crashed into the rear of a stationary goods truck near Ena/Dastan village.
The family was travelling towards Kim. The deceased were identified as Hozefa Adenwala, Murtaza Adenwala, Munira Adenwala and Joyeb Murtaza Adenwala.
The goods truck had stopped on the expressway after its front-left tyre burst.
