Chennai, Sep 27: A family in southern India was allegedly robbed of gold jewellery weighing around 118 sovereigns after burglars broke into their house, with police investigating whether the family's social media activity may have helped the suspects identify the property.

The woman, identified as Madhumitha, runs a YouTube channel where she regularly posts reels and lifestyle videos. Police suspect that burglars may have monitored her online activity before carrying out the theft, according to reports.

In one of her videos that later went viral, Madhumitha is seen showering her young child with stacks of Rs 500 notes while speaking about her affluent lifestyle. She had also reportedly shared videos showing cash and gold jewellery and said that she purchased gold jewellery every month.

Police suspect that such posts may have provided information about the family's wealth and possibly made the house a target.

Madhumitha and her family had gone on a short trip to Tirunelveli. On returning home, they found that the house had been broken into. Jewellery weighing around 118 sovereigns, which had been kept in a bureau, was found missing.

In southern India, a sovereign, also known as a pavan or savaran, is a traditional unit used to measure gold. One sovereign is equivalent to eight grams, making the stolen jewellery approximately 944 grams in weight.

Following a complaint, police launched an investigation into the burglary. Fingerprint experts and forensic teams were deployed at the house to collect evidence, while CCTV footage from the surrounding neighbourhood is being examined.

Investigators are also analysing the family's social media trail to determine whether the suspects had monitored Madhumitha's videos before the burglary.

Her earlier videos about buying gold every month and displaying cash and jewellery have resurfaced online following the theft.
