State govt to issue guidelines on salt consumption, mulls warning labels on packets

Bengaluru, Sep 30: With an aim to create public awareness about the health issues caused by excessive salt consumption, the state government is preparing to issue new guidelines.

Speaking to the media, health minister U T Khader stated that consuming too much salt is detrimental to health and the department is making preparations to introduce guidelines regarding its consumption. "Salt that is conducive to health should be available in the market. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to bring in these guidelines," the minister said.

He further revealed that the government is considering mandating warning labels on salt packets, similar to the statutory health warnings printed on liquor bottles.

"Excessive salt consumption is leading to an increase in cases of high blood pressure and heart attacks," the minister noted. "It does not matter even if salt becomes expensive; people will just consume less. It should be used sparingly, almost like a medicine, taking only as much as required. The salt packets must have printed warnings detailing the health issues and diseases caused by excessive consumption. It is our duty to create awareness among the public," Khader explained.

He also urged the public to heed the health department's advice and follow its regulations. "We will be releasing separate guidelines for schools and colleges based on research and information provided by experts. Action will be taken to curb any food practices that are hazardous to health," he added.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that food hygiene training will be provided to street food vendors across the state.
