Mangalore, Mar 31: All roads led to Kadri Park on Friday March 30 with the opening of the vibrant, innovative and eye-catching flower and fruit exhibition. A food festival too was inaugurated at the park on the occasion.

The three-day exhibition has been jointly organized by the department of horticulture, the district administration, the zilla panchayat, and Siri Horticultural Association.

Inaugurating the fruit and flower expo, zilla panchayat president Shailaja Bhat spoke on the merits of gardening and said that it is only healthy but also economical.

ZP CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash noted that the exhibition was well planned and well executed. He informed that the horticulture department plans to open horti-clinics to provide more infomation on plants and fruits, and also plans to go online soon. The state government has released Rs 867 crore for the development of horticulture, he added.

Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, who was the chief guest, called for adoption of scientific farming methods, due to the shortage of labour in the district which in turn was affecting agriculture.

The exhibition displays a wide-ranging variety of flowers and fruits, all arranged in neat and innovating ways. There is a stall featuring faces of well-known personalities like Manmohan Singh and Sadananda Gowda carved in watermelon.

Another part of the exhibition called the 'Festival of India' inaugurated by Nagaraj Shetty, features an array of colourful flowers arranged to foster communal harmony by depicting various festivals like Holi, Christmas and Ramadan. The entire park is decked beautifully in flowers and fruits of all colours, sizes and shapes.

The food festival, 'Aahara 2012' offers a delectable choice of South Indian, Oriental, Mangalorean, North Indian, Mexican and many other cuisines, along with sweets and chats.

Siri Horticultural Association vice-president Lakshmi Rao Aroor, joint secretary K Nemiraj Konde, district deputy director of horticulture Dr S Nanda and others were present. The exhibition will be open till April 1.

The Western countries annually spend huge money for the beautification of their parks & gardens.
    1. The park should have a main-building with horticultural and other NGO offices.
    2. There should be a spacey lobby with food court and memento stalls around it.
    3. Inter-locked jogging track along the boundary line.
    4. A Lake with jet-fountain or any other innovative water-fountain and water-plants.
    5. A well maintained lawn with all weather & heavy duty wooden or steel seats around it for senior citizens.
    6. A skating ring with steel-railing at one corner.
    7. A children’s play area with good quality and latest play equipments and a broader sand pit around it.
    8. The toy train passing through a small bridge over the lake. The appearance of the train needs up-gradation with addition of brass, steel and a coat of attractive paint to the coaches & engine. It should look like the Disney World train.
    9. In the evening there should be music, variety entertainment and dance stage attached to the main-building facing the park.
    10. A spacey under-ground paid car-park area below the main-building.
MCC should upgrade all the city limits parks that they are already doing it.
They should come up with a bigger & well designed park on the outskirt of the city. The main building should have self sustaining rental stalls for souvenirs and merchandise, flowering plants, seeds & pots, book/CD-stalls and also a well maintained multi-cuisine food court all within the main building. There should be specially designed Ice-cream, Pea-nut and Sugar-Cane juice and Water-Soft-drinks Carts inside the park.

This was one of the best park during my chilhood days....Later on turned out to be the worst place with lovebirds being seen there....Hope the City corporation will take interest in this and develop this park so that our kids get a chance to see Green earth and some Outdoor games to play instead of the Indoor video games and computer games!!
