UN Delivers Myanmar Relief Supplies

United Nations, Mar 31 (IANS): The UN has delivered emergency relief supplies to displaced people in Myanmar's restive Kachin state.

Two convoys carrying relief supplies to Kachin have returned to base, UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey said here Friday.

The UN has called for "sustained access" to those displaced in Kachin to ensure proper assistance to all those affected by conflict, Xinhua reported.

Additionally, the UN has set out to ensure the momentum is kept in assisting all those in need, before the arrival of the rainy season.

Asked about elections in Myanmar, del Buey said upon the Myanmar's government request, a delegation from the UN headquarters in New York will be present to supervise the upcoming by-elections April 1.

Earlier in March, peace talks between Myanmar's central government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) ended without tangible outcome.

However, both sides agreed to continue their discussions.
