Nagoya, Sep 30: India’s women’s squash team assured itself of a medal at the Asian Games after defeating Singapore 2-0 in the quarterfinals at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena on Wednesday.
Tanvi Khanna gave India the lead with a 3-1 victory over Wai Iynn Au Yeong. Tanvi won 11-6, 5-11, 15-13, 11-1 before Anahat Singh sealed the tie with a dominant 3-0 win over Wai Yhann Au Yeong, 11-7, 11-3, 11-4.
Veteran Joshna Chinappa did not need to play after India secured the required two victories. The Indian team had topped Pool C after wins over China, Japan and Iran. India’s semifinal opponent is yet to be decided, with the next match scheduled for Thursday at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena.
In wrestling, Sunil Kumar advanced to the semifinals of the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg category after defeating Tajikistan’s Muhammad Sultonzoda 9-0 by technical superiority in the first period.
The 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist dominated the contest and secured the win with consecutive gut-wrench moves after Sultonzoda was placed in the par terre position. Sunil is expected to face Japan’s Taizo Yoshida in the semifinals.
However, India’s Nisha Dahiya was eliminated from the women’s 68kg competition after losing her round-of-16 bout to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum.
The contrasting wrestling results came as India continued its campaign across multiple disciplines on Day 12 of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
