Mangaluru: MRPL announces Rs 1.20 crore compensation for family of deceased in CHTU fire

Mangaluru, Oct 1: The management of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has announced total financial support and insurance benefits of approximately Rs 1.20 crore for the family of Manish Karkada, who lost his life in the tragic Coker Hydrotreater Unit (CHTU) fire incident on Wednesday, September 30.

Expressing profound grief over the loss of life, the company stated that while no financial assistance can compensate for the loss of a precious life, it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family. MRPL will extend direct financial support of Rs 90 lac to the family. Additionally, they will receive approximately Rs 10 lac under the Group Term Life Insurance (GTLI) and Rs 20 lac under the Workmen Compensation Policy (WCP), bringing the overall relief to around Rs 1.20 crore.

Furthermore, MRPL addressed the welfare of its secondary workforce, stating that a proposal for Mediclaim insurance is currently being drafted and is under discussion. This proposal will be finalized after consultations with the Dakshina Kannada member of parliament and the deputy commissioner. The company expects to complete the process relating to this Mediclaim arrangement within four weeks.

Chief general manager (corporate branding and corporate communications) Dr Rudolph V J Noronha extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the management and reiterated MRPL's commitment to the safety, health, and welfare of all personnel associated with its operations.
